If you saw Guatemalan/Canadian artist Alx Veliz last week making the rounds all over mainstream Canadian media, you would think he’s a brand new, up-and-comer, artist well on his way to becoming the latest Latin sensation to come out of Canada. And boy, would you be wrong. Veliz’s success in the music industry is far from being an overnight occurrence: he’s really put in the time and had humble beginnings, working the local Latin festivals (Hispanic Fiesta, Inti Raymi and more) and eventually moving on to the international music circuit in a span of over 10 years— albeit with a different style of music.

Fast forward 10 years and you now find him right on the heels of releasing a brand new album, “Love Has No Language”, on Spotify, GooglePlay, iTunes and other music services. We had a chance to have a phone chat with Veliz in the midst of his media appearances last week, and he told us a little bit more about the album. “I made the EP in English and Spanish for both audiences to be able to enjoy it,” he commented. “I wanted the Latin community— to have something for them and the English community as well. The way I did it it’s the same song, but translated to the best of my abilities. I wanted to give something that was justifiable, especially in translation. I didn’t want anything to be lost.” The name comes from his profound belief that love is an international language. “It doesn’t matter where you grew up, your cultures, your background. I think love is an international language that everybody identifies themselves with.”
Choosing his first single, “Dancing Kizomba”, and specifically that African rhythm was no accident. If you’re not yet familiar with this particular genre it’s because it’s one of the lesser known dance rhythms and contrary to what many may think, it’s not even a Latin rhythm. Veliz heard it and thought of tweaking it to give it not just a little bit more of a Latin flavour, but he says he felt it might even morph into a more international rhythm, reflective of what he wanted to portray in his own musical path. “When I heard kizomba, automatically the first thing I thought was, ‘This is reggaeton romántico.’ That’s what it sounded like to me. But because it wasn’t technically a Latin rhythm, I thought ‘If I add pop melodies to this and maybe some synthesizers here, it could actually be international: it won’t be classified as a Latin genre or an English genre. It could be actually like an international genre. That’s why I went with it. I thought this could be a great opportunity for us to make a splash and make noise, and thank God it happened that way.”
And make a splash, it did. And it in fact keeps doing so. The feedback has been fantastic and everywhere he goes, people of all cultures are just loving the sound and the song in particular. It’s very catchy, sultry and sensual, all encompassed into one little package. The video that came with the first single, “Dancing Kizomba”, has been a lot of help: it was filmed in a Toronto location and Veliz acknowledges that its very sensual and erotic nature goes hand in hand with what the melody is trying to evoke: it’s a love story because that’s what kizomba, he feels, is about. “Originally when I wrote it (Dancing Kizomba), that’s what it was: it was a love story and how two people could fall in love through the beauty of dance and through the beauty of kizomba. I wanted to portray that story. That was the element that made me fall in love with kizomba: it’s kind of bringing back romance to the music industry in its purest form. That was the other element that I enjoyed about it.”
The success of the first single has opened up doors in ways unimaginable for a Latin/Canadian artist. Veliz has signed a multi-record, multi-label deal with Universal Music Canada, Universal Latino, Island Record (US) and Virgin Records in the UK. It’s all, “a dream come true”, says Veliz. But make no mistake: just like his success did not happen overnight, he’s also not doing this all alone: he has a great team behind him, a group of professionals that includes Carlos Pineda, his manager and who Veliz says “always has his ears to the street”; Veikko Fuhrmann, Ricky Martin’s ex-manager and last but not least Lex Borrero, of 1916 Management and the Head of A&R for Universal Canada. He met Borrero years ago and just recently ran into him at the Junos. The two met a few times, Borrero listened to his music, connected him with Universal execs, they loved what they heard “and the rest is history.”It definitely was a two-way win-win because opportunity met talent and when those two converge, as it was the case with Alx Veliz, beautiful things can happen. And we’re sure they will continue to happen in the future. “I have the dream team and I always tell people that. I’ve been extremely blessed: not only do I have all these record labels behind me, but I also have an incredible team that believes in my talent and is doing everything they can in their power to push it forward,” admits Veliz.
The past few weeks, prior to the official release of his EP, have been a whirlwind. They just came back from Spain, where he just got a “Disco de Oro Digital—Digital Gold Record”. Next he’s travelling to Miami (Latin Billboards), then he’s travelling to LA and Spain is next. The next few weeks will be just as busy, if not more, as he prepares for upcoming concerts, practicing with his band. We will be able to catch a few performances in Toronto for Canada Music Week and he is also preparing what he called “a secret show,” a very special performance that he’s really “looking forward to sharing with Toronto, for our home base, you know? To thank them for all their love and support.”
Toronto, as we all know, is chockfull of talent— a very different and so creatively rich type of talent and something the world is realizing more and more as Canadian artists invade the sound waves. “It’s a beautiful time to be a Canadian artist,” Veliz says. “With all the Justin Biebers, The Weeknds, the Drakes, Alicia Caras and everybody, the world’s eyes are on Canada right now to see where the next talent is coming out, and Latinos are no exception to that rule right now. It’s a privilege for me to belong to the ranks of like a Fito Blanko to actually to carry the torch and introduce the Canadian/Latin culture to the world because I think we have something different from the rest of the world and it’s that we have a lot of different fusions of different cultures, because we know them, because we grew up in Toronto, a place that’s very multicultural. So you’re not only going to get Latin, but you’re going to get Latin music infused with different cultures of the world.”
Alx Veliz is not only introducing a different Latin/Canadian sound to the world, but he’s also seductively dancing his way into the hearts of people from all over Canada and the world. This is undoubtedly only the very beginning for the very charming and personable singer/songwriter, we predict. “For me it’s a dream come true, you know? For people to really appreciate your art and enjoy it the way that they have. I’m just excited and looking forward for the public to discover the rest of the EP and fall in love with it.” And as Latinos and Torontonians, we’re just as excited to see where what we foresee as a very successful music career takes him. Those of us who have attended the local Latin festivals like Hispanic Fiesta and Inti Raymi for years, where a lot of our local kids start off their artistic careers, couldn’t be prouder to see one of those kids making a big splash onto the mainstream music industry.
Si tuviste la oportunidad de ver al artista guatemalteco/canadiense Alx Veliz la semana pasada en varios programas de los principales medios de comunicación canadienses, te imaginarías que es un artista que recién se da a conocer y que está en camino de convertirse en la nueva sensación Latino-canadiense. Y de veras que estarías equivocado. El éxito de Veliz en la industria de la música está lejos de ser algo que se dio de la noche a la mañana: él realmente ha puesto tiemp en esto, con comienzos humildes, presentándose en los festivales latinos locales (Hispanic Fiesta, Inti Raymi y más) y gradualmente moviéndose en el circuito internacional de la música en un lapso de más de 10 años, aunque con un estilo diferente de música.
De eso ya hace 10 años y ahora se encuentra en los talones de lanzar su nuevo álbum, “El amor no tiene lenguaje”, en Spotify, GooglePlay, iTunes y otros servicios de música. Tuvimos la oportunidad de tener una conversación telefónica con Veliz cuando tuvo un tiempito entre apariciones en los medios la semana pasada y nos contó un poco más sobre el álbum. “Hice el EP en Inglés y Español para que ambas audiencias para poder disfrutar de él”, comentó . “Yo quería darle algo a la comunidad latina y a la comunidad anglosajona también. La forma en que lo hice fue con la misma canción, pero traducida de la mejor manera que pude. Quería darle algo que fuera justificable, sobre todo en la traducción. No quería que nada se perdiera.” El nombre del álbum nace de su creencia profunda de que el amor es un lenguaje internacional. “No importa dónde hayas sido criado, de que cultura provienes, cuales son stus antecedentes. Creo que el amor es una lengua internacional con la que todo el mundo se identifica.”
La elección de su primer sencillo, “Dancing Kizomba”, y específicamente la escogencia ese ritmo africano no se dio por accidente. Para aquellos que todavía no están familiarizados con este género en particular es probable que sea porque es uno de los ritmos de baile menos conocidos y al contrario de lo que muchos pueden pensar, no es un ritmo latino. Veliz lo escuchó y se le ocurrió ajustarlo un poco para darle no sólo un poco más de un sabor latino, sino que incluso pensó que podría transformarse en un ritmo más internacional, un reflejo de lo que quería retratar en su propio camino musical. “Cuando oí kizomba, automáticamente lo primero que pensé fue: ‘Este es el reggaeton romántico.’ Asi me sonaba. Pero debido a que no era técnicamente un ritmo latino, pensé, ‘Si añado melodías pop a esto y tal vez algunos sintetizadores, podría transformarse en algo internacional: no va a ser clasificado como un género latino o un género de Inglés. Podría ser en realidad como un género internacional. Por eso me decidí por este género. Pensé que esto podría ser una gran oportunidad para nosotros los latinos de hacer ruido y causar sensación, y gracias a Dios que va sucediendo de esa manera”.
Causar sensación es de hecho lo que Veliz ha venido haciendo en los últimos meses. La respuesta del público ha sido fantástica y donde quiera que va, la gente de todas las culturas termina encantada con el nuevo sonido y la canción en particular. Es un pequeño paquete que lo incluye todo en una melodía muy pegadiza y sensual. El video que acompaña el primer sencillo, “Dancing Kizomba”, tambien ha ayudado bastante: se rodó en un lugar Toronto y Veliz reconoce que su naturaleza bastante sensual y erótica va de la mano con lo que la melodía está tratando de evocar: es una historia de amor, porque eso es lo que el siente que es y es de lo que trata kizomba. “Originalmente cuando la escribí (Dancing Kizomba) eso es lo que era: era una historia de amor y cómo dos personas podrían enamorarse a través de la belleza de la danza y a través de la belleza de kizomba. Quería representar esa historia. Ese fue el elemento que me hizo enamorarme de kizomba: está retornando el romance en su forma más pura a la industria de la música. Ese fue el otro elemento que disfruté a su vez.”
El éxito del primer sencillo ha abierto las puertas de una forma inimaginable para un artista Latino/canadiense. Veliz ha firmado un contrato de varios discos con varias casas disqueras: Universal Music Canada, Universal Latino, Island Records (Estados Unidos) y Virgin Records en Inglaterra. Es “un sueño hecho realidad”, dice Veliz. Al igual que el éxito no le llegó de repente, tampoco ha sido un trabajo de un solo individuo: tiene un gran equipo detrás de él, un grupo de profesionales que incluye a Carlos Pineda, su manager y que Veliz dice “siempre está alerta a lo que sucede afuera”; Veikko Fuhrmann, ex-manager de Ricky Martin, y por último Lex Borrero, de 1916 Management, y la cabeza de A&R de Universal Canadá. Veliz se conoció con Borrero hace varios años y recientemente se encontró de nuevo con él en los Junos. Se juntaron un par de veces, Borrero escuchó su música, lo contactó con los ejecutivos de Universal, a quienes les encantó lo que escucharon “y el resto es historia.” Definitivamente fue una victoria para ambos, en la que talento y oportunidad se encontraron al tiempo justo y cuando estas dos convergen, como fue el caso con Alx Veliz, algo muy bonito puede ocurrir. Y estamos seguros de que seguirá ocurriendo en el futuro. “Siempre le digo a la gente que tengo un ‘Dream Team’. He sido muy bendecido: No solamente tengo todos estos sellos discográficos apoyándome, pero también tengo un equipo increíble que cree en mi talento y está haciendo todo lo posible para poder seguir adelante”, admite Veliz.
Las últimas semanas, antes del lanzamiento oficial de su EP, han sido un torbellino. Acaban de regresar de España, donde recibió un “Disco de Oro Digital.” A continuación viajará a Miami (Premios Billboard), después Los Ángeles y España. Las próximas semanas serán igual de ocupadas, mientras se prepara para los próximos conciertos, practicando con su banda. Tendremos la suerte en Toronto de poder ver un par de sus presentaciones en Canada Music Week y él también está preparando “un show secreto”, una actuación muy especial que esta preparando para “compartir con Toronto, para nuestros fans en casa, para darles las gracias por todo su amor y apoyo.”
Toronto, como todos sabemos, está repleto de talento— talento muy diferente y creativamente enriquecido; algo que el mundo descubre cada vez más asi los artistas canadienses invaden las ondas sonoras. “Es un momento hermoso de ser un artista canadiense,” dice Veliz. “Con Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Drake, Alicia Cara y todo el resto, los ojos del mundo están en Canadá en este momento en espera de la próxima estrella, y los latinos no son una excepción a esa regla. Es un privilegio para mí compartir este honor de ser un artista latino/canadiense como Fito Blanko, para realmente llevar la antorcha y presentar la cultura Latina/canadiense para el mundo, porque creo que tenemos algo diferente del resto del mundo. Tenemos una gran cantidad de diferentes fusiones de diferentes culturas, y al crecer en Toronto las conocemos bien, ya que este es un lugar muy multicultural. Así que no sólo eres un artista Latino, sino que el talento latino infundido con diferentes culturas del mundo.”
Alx Veliz no sólo está introduciendo un sonido Latino/canadiense bastante diferente para el mundo, sino que también está seduciendo al ritmo de kizomba todos los corazones de los canadienses y el mundo. Podemos pronosticar con toda confianza que este es sin lugar a dudas sólo el comienzo para este encantador y carismático artista. “Para mí es un sueño hecho realidad, sabes? Que la gente aprecie mi arte y la disfruten como lo están haciendo. Estoy muy emocionado y con ganas que el público descubra el resto de la EP y se enamoren tambien de el.” Nosotros como Latinos y residentes de Toronto estamos igual de emocionados de ver a donde llegará lo que estamos seguros será una muy exitosa carrera musical. Aquellos de nosotros que han asistido a los festivales latinos locales como Hispanic Fiesta e Inti Raymi durante años, donde muchos de nuestros jovenes Latinos han iniciado sus carreras artísticas, no podríamos estar más orgullosos de ver a uno de estos jóvenes causando tanta sensación en industria de la música canadiense.
