As promised, the 4th annual National Bank Salsa at Blue Mountain was bigger and better than ever.  This past weekend Blue Mountain, a place that is in itself so full of character and truly one of the most beautiful resorts in all of Ontario, was spiced up with the presence of Latin dancers, musicians and an eclectic crowd who didn’t waste a minute to enjoy the sun and the breathtaking scenery, all wrapped in the music and beautiful sounds of our Latin rhythms.

This colourful festival, which was voted Best New Event in 2009 and was listed in the Festivals and Events Ontario Top 100 list, had its best year yet– it was a blessing that Mother Nature contributed with gorgeous weather and made this weekend all the more glorious.  The music and colour enveloped all those in attendance and it was just fantastic to see the crowds be swayed away, dancing together and enjoying the best of what Latin culture has to offer.

On Friday night those who started enjoying the weekend early were treated to a VIP performance by Pavlo at the Westin Trillium House.  Saturday morning all those in attendance were invited to attend the beach party at Blue Mountain’s private beach, including a free shuttle service from the resort.

On Saturday the place was buzzing from start to end, and the festivities were made all the better by the beautiful sunshine and the warm weather.   The sounds of Tropicanada and Ricardo Barboza had young and old dancing to the rhythm of salsa at the Water St. Bandstand.  On the other side of the resort, near the new mini golf course, Steps Interactive Dance Lessons were busy getting everyone to learn the steps of salsa, merengue and all the different Latin dances, so they could enjoy the festivities to the fullest.

Meanwhile on the main stage at the main square performances by Lady Son and Salsa On Six had everyone dancing to the rhythm of melodious Latin beats.  It was so nice to see everyone coming together, learning the steps and becoming one with our culture.  The fact that everyone was having so much fun and was embracing all the richness that Latin culture has to offer was very rewarding and heartwarming.

The Caliente Entertainment Drum and Dance parade just seemed to put the finishing touch to what undoubtedly became one of the biggest showcases of Latin culture this summer.  People just flocked to the front of the stage to see Martin Samuels’ dancers in their colourful costumes, showcasing the best of our red-hot rhythms.  They put quite a show on and people just seemed to love every minute of it.  The stage just lit up with some of the young dancers and the young ladies who seductively conquered the crowd, dancing passionately to some very, very caliente rhythms, dressed in very vibrant and bright costumes.

This extravagant display of music, dance, vivid costumes had an appropriately explosive ending with an dazzling display of fireworks that the huge crowd, especially the little ones, seemed to enjoy to the fullest.  At this point, club goers were about to continue the party, with line ups beginning to form all over the nightclubs and bars in the area, while those of us who came with our families retired to our respective lodging places for the night.

Aldo Di Felice, TLN’s current president, said that “TLN is proud to celebrate Latin culture inCanadawith this highly anticipated event that grows every year.  The excitement for this event speaks of the richness of our diverse communities and it’s wonderful to see so many families take part in a celebration that enhances the appreciation of Latin culture.”

I definitely think TLN is on the right track in the organization and the high quality of this event as it had a lot of the elements that make people of any origin enjoy (or learn to enjoy) and fall madly in love with everything our rich culture has to offer.  To be able to do it in such a beautiful and splendid setting just adds to the magic of the experience.  This is a very good, safe and wholesome event to attend, and the memories created not just for us Latin people who came in droves, but also for those who are not of Latin descent, will be with them forever… well, until next year, that is.

Salsa en Blue Mountain:
Invasión Latina de Música y Cultura

Lo prometido es deuda y sin duda alguna el 4to Festival de Salsa en Blue Mountain fue más espectacular que nunca.  Este fin de semana pasado en Blue Mountain (o la Montaña Azul), un lugar que de por sí es paradisíaco y uno de los más bellos complejos turísticos en todo Ontario, se sazonó aún más con la presencia de bailes y música Latina, y con una muchedumbre ecléctica, quienes no perdieron un solo instante para disfrutar del brillante sol y el imponente panorama, todo esto envuelto en la música y bellos sonidos de nuestros ritmos latinos.

Este colorido festival, que se llevó el premio al Mejor Nuevo Evento en el 2009 y fue incluído en los Top 100 Festivales y Eventos en Ontario, tuvo en el 2012 su mejor año, y la madre naturaleza pareció contribuir a la causa, haciendo de este fin de semana uno de los más cálidos y gloriosos del año.  La música y los vibrantes colores envolvieron a todo el público asistente, y fue fenomenal observar a todo el grupo siendo uno solo, danzando juntos y disfrutando de lo mejor que nuestra cultura ofrece.

El viernes en la noche el festival inició para aquellos que llegaron temprano al complejo con una presentación de Pavlo en el Westin Trillium House.  El Sábado por la mañana los asistentes disfrutaron de unas cuantas horas en la playa privada de Blue Mountain, incluyendo transporte gratis a la playa y de regreso al complejo.

El Sábado el lugar estaba que hervía con la multitud asistente, y las festividades se calentaron más con el ardiente calor del sol y la cálida temperatura de ese día.  El sonido de las bandas Tropicanada y Ricardo Barboza hicieron bailar a grandes y chicos al ritmo de la salsa en el Water Street Bandstand.  Al otro lado del complejo, cerca del nuevo curso de mini golf, Steps Interactive Dance Lessons tenían a todos ocupados aprendiendo los pasos de la salsa, merengue y otros diferentes bailes latinos, preparándolos para disfrutar de la fiesta a plenitud.

Mientras tanto en el escenario principal en la plaza central Lady Son y Salsa On Six tenían a todos bailando al ritmo de nuestros melódicos ritmos latinos.  Fue muy lindo observar como todos bailaban al unísono, practicando los pasos y sumergiéndose enteramente en nuestra cultura.  Era evidente que todos la estaban pasando muy bien y se empaparon de nuestra cultura con mucho entusiasmo y energía, lo que nos llenó a los latinos de mucha alegría y satisfacción.

El desfile de tambores y bailarines de Caliente Entertainment simplemente le dio el toque final a la que sin duda fue una de las más importantes exhibiciones de nuestra cultura Latina de este verano.  El público se lanzó al frente para observar de cerca a los bailarines de Martin Samuels en sus trajes tan coloridos, ofreciendo una muestra de nuestros ritmos candentes.  Hicieron un espectáculo de primera y el público observaba embelesado por toda la duración del show.  El escenario se encendió con la participación de los jóvenes bailarines y las chicas vestidas en sus trajes de colores y plumas vibrantes, quienes deslumbraron a los alli presentes, moviéndose seductoramente al ritmo ardiente de las melodías Latinas.

Este extravagante despliegue de música, danza y vestimenta de intensos colores tuvo in final explosivo apropiado para la ocasión, con una deslumbrante muestra de juegos pirotécnicos que a todos, especialmente a los chiquillos, pareció gustarles muchísimo.  A este punto los jóvenes empezaron a hacer fila fuera de los clubes de baile, y para los que llegamos en familia este marcó el fin de un día lleno de muchas sorpresas.

Aldo Di Felice, actual presidente de TLN, dijo que “TLN se enorgullece de celebrar la cultura Latina en Canadá con este evento tan altamente anticipado, el cual crece año con año.  La expectativa del público para este evento nos muestra la riqueza y diversidad de nuestras comunidades y es maravilloso ver a tantas familias que vienen a formar parte de esta celebración que realza el aprecio por la cultura Latina.”

Yo definitivamente creo que TLN va por buen camino con la organización y la alta calidad de este evento, que cuenta con muchos de los elementos necesarios para que cada persona, cualquiera sea su origen, pueda disfrutar o aprender a disfrutar en incluso aprender a amar a nuestra cultura que es tan rica y variada.  El poder disfrutar de este festival en un lugar tan encantador y espléndido agrega un toque especial a la magia de la experiencia.  Este es un evento muy lindo, sano y apropiado para toda la familia, y los recuerdos que quedan no solo para nosotros los Latinos, sino para aquellos que no lo son, realmente los llevamos para siempre… o hasta el próximo año, cuando Salsa en Blue Mountain regrese de nuevo.
