One of the basic rights every child should have is access to education.  Our children have that privilege in Canada, but that’s not the case for children in poor areas of the world.  Andrew McLaughlin, a teacher at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering, realized that and he encouraged and guided his students to create the non-profit organization Learning for Hope (the English translation of Suyakuywan Yachusun, its actual name, in Quechua).  They were hoping to improve the lives and the quality of education for underprivileged and special needs students in Perú, and they’ve done just that for the past 5 years.

The project initiated in Cusco, Perú and they have built and improved the conditions of 10 schools to date, including schools in rural communities, an orphanage for girls and a special needs school inLima.  ” The project has grown because of the energy and passion of my students and other members of our school community,” says Andrew.  “However, the main reason for the growth of the project in Peru has been the involvement of the Latino community here in Durham and the Toronto area.”

Success in Perú inspired them to seek out other opportunities in other countries in need, and with the Tobar family’s guidance, a Salvadoran family residing in Pickering, they began networking with Salvadoran nationals and eventually connected with AGAPE, a non-profit organization in Sonsonate, El Salvador, where their first project was building a playground in a school for special needs.

Their next project in the town of Armenia will have them purchasing raw materials to support much needed infrastructure reinforcement in the Buenos Aires school.  One of the conditions for Learning for Hope to get involved is for the community to provide the labour in the construction of the school, which parents and students of the Buenos Aires school will do in this case.  The organization’s goal is to raise $2,000 to buy the building materials, hopefully by the end of June.   In August of this year Andrew will be travelling to El Salvador and Clemel and Ana Maria Tobar are assisting him in raising the funds, to hopefully have enough at the end of the month for the completion of the project.

“Two years ago I visited El Salvador for the first time,” says Andrew.  “And in a short period of time I was able to see that El Salvador is a beautiful place. The people I met were kind and very proud of their history. The country itself was green and breathtaking. The food was delicious and the music was happy. And I have never met people with such a strong belief in God. But I could also see a great deal of pain and frustration on the faces of the people that I met.”

El proyecto educativo en Armenia
(El Salvador):
La oportunidad de cada niño
a una educación digna.

Uno de los derechos básicos que cada niño debería tener es acceso a una educación digna.  Nuestros niños en Canadá lo tienen, pero ese no es el caso en los países pobres del mundo.  Andrew McLaughlin, un profesor de la escuela secundaria católica St. Mary en Pickering, llegó a esa conclusión y puso manos a la obra guiando y motivando a sus estudiantes en la creación de la organización sin fines de lucro Learning for Hope (La Esperanza de Aprender o Suyakuywan Yachusun, su traducción literal en Quechua).  La idea al iniciar esta organización era de mejorar las condiciones de vida y la calidad de la educación para niños de escasos recursos y también niños con problemas de desarrollo.  El proyecto inició en Perú y por 5 años consecutivos han alcanzado las metas que se propusieran desde un inicio.

El proyecto dio inicio en Cusco, Perú, y hasta la fecha han construído o mejorado 10 escuelas, incluyendo proyectos en las zonas rurales, un orfanato para niñas y una escuela de necesidades educativas especiales en Lima.  “El proyecto ha crecido gracias a la energía y pasión de mis estudiantes y otros miembros  de la comunidad escolar,” dice Andrew. “Sin embargo, la mayor razón por el crecimiento del proyecto en Perú has sido la participación de la comunidad latina de la zona (de Durham) y de todoToronto.”

El éxito en Perú los inspiró a buscar otras oportunidades en otros países que lo necesitaran, y con la ayuda de la familia Tobar, una familia Salvadoreña residente en Pickering, pudieron conectarse con nacionales salvadoreños y eventualmente se conectaron con AGAPE, una organización sin fines de lucro en Sonsonate, El Salvador.  Su primer proyecto fue la construcción de una estructura de juegos en una escuela de necesidades especiales.

El próximo proyecto será en la comunidad de Armenia, donde comprarán materiales de construcción para reforzar la infraestructura de la escuela Buenos Aires.  Una de las condiciones que Learning for Hope impone para conceder ayuda es que la comunidad participe activamente proveyendo la mano de obra en los proyectos que construyen.  En este caso los padres y los estudiantes unirán fuerzas para llevar el proyecto a cabo.  El objetivo de la organización acá enToronto es recaudar $2,000 para comprar los materiales de construcción, con un poco de suerte de aqui a fines de Junio.  Andrew viajará a El Salvador en Agosto y Clemel y Ana María Tobar están asistiéndolo en recaudar los fondos necesarios para tener lo necesario para completar el proyecto exitosamente.

“Hace dos años visité El Salvadorpor primera vez,” Cuenta Andrew.  “En ese corto período pude ver que El Salvador es un lugar precioso, con gente muy gentil y orgullosa de su historia.  El país está lleno de áreas verdes, con paisajes arrebatadores.  La comida es deliciosa y la música es alegre.  La fé en Dios de su gente es algo que nunca había visto.  Pero a su vez pude ver inmenso dolor y frustración en los ojos de la gente.”
