An Afternoon of Music with Cuban Piano Virtuoso Hilario Durán

An Afternoon of Music with
Cuban Piano Virtuoso Hilario Durán

German monk and theologian Martin Luther said it best: “Next to the word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world.” And attending a Jazz Vespers session at St. Philip’s Anglican Church in Etobicoke on a crisp spring Sunday afternoon, where the musical guests were the Hilario Durán trio (with Roberto Occhipinti on bass and Mark Kelso on drums), and listening to their flawless performance of Afro-Cuban, Latin jazz and modern jazz pieces, Luther’s quote made all the sense in the world.

Enjoy Your Summer with Live Music in Durham

Enjoy Your Summer with Live Music in Durham

Full Disclosure: There is nothing that makes me happier than to spend a warm summer day or evening listening to good live music while enjoying the outdoors. Last month we listed our 2016 Edition of Alma Latina’s Top 10 Summer Festivals in the city— hopefully you have enjoyed a few good ones that have already happened. But if all you want to do is listen to music— any music— then you’re in luck because Durham Region offers many a choice of live performances in every municipality. Best of all? You don’t have to spend a penny enjoying some fantastic live music in the many outdoor concerts that are offered throughout the region. Just bring a lawn chair or a blanket (don’t forget the sunscreen), sit back, relax and enjoy. Oh, and if the mood strikes, dance like no one’s watching.

She-Sheds: A Nicer and Prettier Version of the Man-Cave

She-Sheds: A Nicer and Prettier Version of the Man-Cave

Man caves are a common feature of many a household in North America. In the modern man-cave it’s not at all uncommon to find the wall-to-wall flat screen TVs, sophisticated home audio systems and surround sound, the latest video-gaming consoles, a well-stocked bar, the obligatory mini-fridge and if spacious enough you might even find ping pong, pool or air hockey tables. Oh, and I almost forgot: the mandatory recliner chair. If you have one of those, you’re probably greeting the man of the house only in passing once in a blue moon, as down he goes to "get away from it all" after a hard day at work. And you probably never see him on weekends. But let me tell you something, boys: whatever you men do, women can do not only better, but a lot of the times much, much prettier. So is the case for the latest trend in renovation: the She-Sheds.
