Building Special Memories on Mother’s Day

A lot of people say that Mother’s Day should be every day.  But since it isn’t, this should be a very special day for that being who’s literally gone through the worst pain known to man (man, really? No, known More »

As part of LulaWorld, Lula Lounge’s 10th anniversary celebration, Café con Pan presented to a packed house the official release of their second album, Nuevos Caminos a Santiago (New Roads to Santiago), their homage to Santiago Tuxtla, the small town in Veracruz, Mexico, where Kali Niño, the group’s vocalist and lyricist, hails from.  This is also the place where both she and Alec Dempster, the other half of Café con Pan, originally met.  Joining them on stage were guest vocalist Marisoul and zapateado dancer Violeta from Xalapa.

Jairo-2

It’s been 27 years since that tragic day when my brother Jairo died.  27 years and all the memories come flooding back like it was just yesterday.  He was only 19 years old, a couple of months short of turning 20.  Like many young people in the 1980s, he gave his life for a cause that turned out to be so empty and disappointing in the end.  He was a young idealist, completely seduced by the idea of power to the people, better living conditions for the poor and a firm believer  that the leaders of the Nicaraguan revolution had the best intentions for the country and that we proud Nicaraguans had to defend our country and our sovereignty at all cost.

May Celeb - Mother

A lot of people say that Mother’s Day should be every day.  But since it isn’t, this should be a very special day for that being who’s literally gone through the worst pain known to man (man, really? No, known to WOMAN) to bring you into this world.  Regardless of the type of mother you have– whether you think she’s awesome or maybe not the best– just based on this fact alone, she deserves to get at least a bouquet of flowers on Mother’s Day for the rest of her life.

As a recent immigrant to Canada, my first trip ever to Niagara Falls was unforgettable.  This majestic, iconic wonder of the world, that I had only seen on TV and pictures, was just something way beyond what I could have ever imagined.  But having just immigrated to Canada, at that time we didn’t really know much about the area and were not really able to afford many of the hotels and attractions.  So we would go visit, spend the day, and then head back home late in the afternoon.

Where to get a Free Meal on your Birthday

Free Meal Banner

You’re turning a year older and as the years start piling up you realize birthdays become a bittersweet occasion: it’s a time to celebrate but also to get just a little bit older with each passing year.  So what better way to celebrate yourself and see the positive side of the occasion than with a free meal?  You see, what you save on a good meal you can add to what you’ll spend on yourself later… it’s a win-win! And so, I’ve compiled a list of places where you can be fed for free so you can do some extra shopping for that little something you really want that day.
